About November Reign 2023
Our History
Established in 2008, Open Studio set out to offer an alternative to the white wall galleries of Coffs Harbour by showcasing exhibitions of so called 'Outsider Art' along with painting large mural commissions around the Mid North Coast. Eventually due to demand, Open Studio started retailing spray paint and offering weekly graffiti workshops for the artistically intrigued while also activating public art spaces for travelling artists.
Previous Jams
After coordinating multiple small graffiti jams and painting live at music festivals and bush doofs, an opportunity arose to run another small event in November 2015 which through an outpouring of community support, connections in the Australian graffiti network and a small crew of local volunteers, snowballed into the first month long graffiti festival staged at 4 locations over 4 weekends. November Reign was born...

November Reign is curated by Ash from Open Studio and the artist line up for 2023 is comprised of writers that have supported Open Studio over the years, connected on a wall or have caught his attention through their own output and dedication to style.
Spots on the line up are now CLOSED.
Unfortunately there is only so far we can stretch the budget and only limited spaces at feature wall sites before people get 2 tins and half a square foot to paint.
If you want to come through to paint and support the small family business that runs the event, then buy some paint at Open Studio and we can direct you to one of the local legal spots so you can get your flick! We really appreciate your support in these testing times for small business. Knuckle emoji ;)

STYLE WARS Screening - FRIDAY 10th NOV
To kick off the 2nd weekend of the November Reign 2023 mural festival, the Open Studio team are excited to be able to screen the documentary that captured the Style Writing movement in its heyday on the NYC subway, here in Coffs Harbour 40 years after its inital release on the Public Broadcasting Service.
STYLE WARS
Directed by Tony Silver and produced by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant, it was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the 1983 Sundance Film Festival. STYLE WARS is regarded as the indispensable document of New York Street culture of the early ’80s, the filmic record of a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded into the world from a city in crisis.
STYLE WARS captured the look and feel of New York’s ramshackle subway system as graffiti writers’ public playground, battleground and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them by every means possible were Mayor Edward Koch, the police, and the New York Transit Authority. Meanwhile MCs, DJs and B-boys rocked the city with new sounds and new moves and street corner breakdance battles evolved into performance art.
New York’s legendary kings of graffiti and b-boys own a special place in the hip hop pantheon. STYLE WARS has become an emblem of the original, embracing spirit of hip hop as it reached out across the world from underground tunnels, uptown streets, clubs and playgrounds.

“Citizen Gane” chronicles the life of legendary Australian Graffiti Writer Gane 2, who back in the early 1980’s at age 12, was one of the very first generation writers to play a significant role in developing the Graffiti and hip hop scene in Australia.
His influence was felt for decades after, until his passing in October 2022. He first came to the attention of the Australian public back in 1985 when, aged 15, he was featured on the popular television program 60 Minutes. Overnight, he was a graffiti and pop culture sensation. Reviled by the general public but revered and admired amongst his peers, it earned him the highest honour of “King” status. The King of Sydney.
“Citizen Gane” is an entertaining story full of colour and larger than life characters. Gane tells his life story in his own words, accompanied by more than two dozen interviews from other graffiti writers, family and friends. All original music has been composed by Def Wish Cast.
The film premiered at Dendy Cinemas in Newtown, Sydney, to a sold out audience. Director, Producer and Editor Jay Richards has recently won a number of International Film Festival Awards for his last film, a thriller called “Resolve”, including Best Short Film and Best Director at the Cannes Awards, Paris Cinefest, and the Singapore World Film Carnival.
